Mass murder of five Bunong shakes community as police investigate

Mondulkiri provincial police are investigating the mass murder of five Bunong people and one boy who was seriously injured in Me Pai village in Pech Chreada district’s Pou Chrei commune but officials have not been able to confirm the cause of the murders.

Provincial deputy police chief Brigadier General So Sovann said that experts are carefully investigating the case. However, as of yesterday, the perpetrators have not been identified yet.

He said the case was a premeditated act of resentment but investigators did not know who would want to take revenge on the victims. Before finding the body of the victims, their relative called to visit as usual but this time the phone continued to ring without being answered.

The relative was apprehensive and quickly went to the victim’s home where he found the bodies of three victims in the forest near their house and the body of a critically injured boy.

“After seeing his relatives lying dead, he called the authorities for professional officers to investigate. We are very sorry for the deaths of the Bunong people. We will continue our investigation to arrest the suspects to punish them according to the law,” Brig Gen Sovann said.

Commune police chief Captain Yan Sany confirmed there are five murder victims and a boy who was seriously injured. The injured boy was sent to the provincial hospital by his relatives for treatment.

The bodies of the five victims were examined by police and medical experts before being handed over to their relatives for traditional rites.

Cap Sany said the five victims were from the same family while the injured boy is a neighbour whose family lives together on the same farm in a rural area 30 kilometres from the Sen Monorom city.

He described the crime as the man having been shot with one bullet in the head from left to right, while his wife and children were beaten with a stick on the back of the head and found dead at the scene with more wounds on their arms, legs and torso.

“The boy who was seriously injured was the son of a neighbour. During the incident, the boy went to buy food from the family and the perpetrators tried to kill him so that he would not be able to tell anyone about what happened,” Cap Sany said.

Samon Lamy, a representative of the Bunong community said he received the shocking news that five people had died and that they were Bunong people. He called on the authorities to search for the perpetrators and prosecute  them.

“In the name of Indigenous people, we urge police to quickly investigate the crime and arrest the perpetrators and prosecute them according to law. I condemn this crime because it shows the most cruelty in our Cambodian society,” he said.

According to the police report, three of the murder victims were found immediately at the scene on Wednesday and the seriously injured boy togther with  three other family members were missing. Police conducted a thorough search yesterday when they found three more bodies.

The report identified the victims as Mot Krak, 45, ; Nich Srey, 41, (his wife); Krak Ly, five-years-old; Noun Sam Ath, 16-years-old (seriously injured); Krak Ny, five-years-old and Krak Sly, 12-years-old.
