Frontline herd immunity by the numbers

Provinces bordering Thailand report high vaccination numbers of both the residents and migrant workers, a move to getting closer to reaching herd immunity against Covid-19.




Battambang provincial governor Sok Lou told Khmer Times yesterday that as of December 12: “For the 18-year-old and above age group, the official target is 817,536 adults (excluding 213,432 who have medical problems leaving 604,104 injectable adults).”

“For the six to 11-year-old age group, the official target is 164,874 children. The first dose was given to 140,970 people and 135,049 people are fully vaccinated,” he added.



“There are six positive cases of Covid-19; four of them are women and all are fully vaccinated. The result was confirmed by PCR test,” Lou said. “Positive cases have dropped significantly and there are no deaths.”

“The border has tightened since the new Omicron variant was detected in Thailand. As its neighbour, we will strengthen both our entry and departure locations to ensure that no imported cases of the new variant get in,” he said.

Preah Vihear provincial deputy governor Pok Ravy said: “The adult target in our province is 151,620 with 147,203 receiving their first dose and 89,098 are fully vaccinated equal to 58.79%.”

“The youth target is 30,798 with31,540 receiving their first dose and 29,676 are fully vaccinated equal to 96.42%,” said Ravy.

She added that the six to 11-year-old children target is 32,563 with 34,806 receiving their first dose and 32,779 are fully vaccinated equal to 100.78%. The five-year-old children target is 6,783 with 4,415 receiving their first dose and 2,660 are fully vaccinated. There are only five positive cases confirmed by PCR tests yesterday and no deaths


Banteay Meanchey Health Department director Le Chansangvath said that as of December 13, only 50,274 people have received a booster shot.

“The number of positive cases has dropped dramatically among migrant workers returning from Thailand through the border, with rapid tests rarely found (per day). An average of 10 people a day are tested with PCR,” he said.

“There were 56 mild Covid-19 patients and only 32 serious patients as of yesterday. Adults who have received their first dose is 425,408 people and 45,605 adults are fully vaccinated,” he added.

Chansangvath said that 89,399 youth received their first shot while 80,591 youth are fully vaccinated. Children aged six to 11-years-old who have received their first dose is 103,616 and 96,445 children are fully vaccinated.

“There are 15,427 five-year-old children who received their first shot and 11,474 children are fully vaccinated,” he said.
